The palatal expander is used to widen your upper jaw by applying gentle pressure on your upper molars with each adjustment. You’ll find instructions below to guide you on when and how to adjust your expander. Once the desired expansion is achieved, you’ll continue wearing the expander for several months to solidify the changes and prevent any regression.

Adjusting the Palatal Expander

Step 1

In a well-lit area, have the patient tilt their head back.

Step 2

Insert the key into the hole until it is secure.

Step 3

Push the key towards the back of the mouth; watch for the fender to rotate and a new hole to appear. Stop when the key reaches the back of the expander.

Step 4

Gently press back and down towards the tongue to remove the key. The new hole for the next adjustment should now be visible.
